Piketon Employees Raise More Than $900 for Cancer Compassion Fund

USEC’s Ohio employees provided a $903 donation to the Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Compassion Fund. The proceeds were raised through employee bake sales and raffles for items such as “Rosie the Pumpkin” shown at center.  “Rosie” was hand painted by Judy Summers, an employee of Fluor-B&W Portsmouth LLC of Piketon. Rosie’s winner donated her to the SOMC Cancer Center following the raffle.

The SOMC Compassion Fund supports cancer patients while they are undergoing active cancer care.  The funds are used for patient assistance needs such as utilities, medications, transportation and common necessities needed during cancer care.

Vanessa Burkitt, Finance Manager for USEC Inc.’s American Centrifuge Plant, presented the money to Wendi Waugh,  Administrative Director of SOMC Cancer Services.

“As a cancer survivor myself, I was proud to participate with my co-workers to raise funding for such a worthy cause,” said Burkitt.  “We appreciate the assistance that this fund provides to our area patients in need.”

USEC employees also participated in the “Paint Portsmouth Pink” campaign coordinated by SOMC on October 21 to promote breast cancer awareness during the month of October.
