With more than 50 years of experience providing technical and analytical support to the U.S. government, the Portsmouth Analytical Laboratory has built a strong reputation in the areas of health physics, industrial safety and environmental/waste management.

Staff and Facilities

• Modern equipment and capabilities such as x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, several Fourier transform infrared instruments (micro- and spectroscopes) and ICP/Mass spectrometers
• More than 100 staff chemists, technicians and support personnel
• 60,000 square feet of laboratory space
• 160 chemical hoods and more than 5,000 square feet of bench space

Dedicated to Quality Assurance

Because quality is essential to the success of each analytic project, the laboratory has set high standards for quality and has documented its approach to quality in a QA Plan based on NQA-I standards. This plan establishes the infrastructure of quality in all that is done by the laboratory.

The Quality Assurance Program is administered by a dedicated and independent laboratory staff.

In addition, the laboratory routinely participates in numerous external proficiency programs. These internal and external quality control results are monitored by statisticians and managerial staff to ensure consistent and unbiased analytical results.

Certifications

The laboratory holds the following certifications/qualifications:

• Department of Energy Consolidated Audit Program (DOECAP)
• National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) through the State of Utah’s Environmental Laboratory Certification Program (ELCP)
• American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) for the Industrial Hygiene Laboratory Accreditation Program (IHLAP)
• Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) for Chemical and Microbiological analyses on potable water.
