June 8, 2007 - USEC has awarded seven $1,000 scholarships to the following sons and daughters of employees at its Paducah plant.
Jonathan Lawrence Lambert Jones, son of Adolphus (Engineering) and Tanya Jones, is a graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School. Jon plans to attend the University of Louisville to study engineering. He was awarded the U of L Wilford R. Porter Scholarship. He plans to pursue an advanced degree, possibly in the fields of nuclear or aerospace engineering.
Laura Rosalie Knott, daughter of Henry (Maintenance) and Donna Knott, is a valedictorian graduate of Heath High School. She will attend the University of Kentucky where she has been chosen for the accelerated BS/MD program and will pursue a career in the medical field.
John Christopher Leeper, son of Jeff (Utilities) and Jana Leeper, is a valedictorian graduate of Heath High School. He plans to attend the University of Kentucky to study math or science.
Jonathan Andrew Shidal, son of Randy Shidal (Security), is a graduate of Heath High School. He will attend DePauw University on a Presidential Scholarship where he plans to study engineering and physics and pursue an advanced engineering degree.
Katherine Anastasia Sohl, daughter of J.D. (Engineering) and Alice Sohl, is a valedictorian graduate of Lone Oak High School. Katie plans to attend Coastal Carolina University to study marine science as a prelude to a veterinary degree. She plans to work in the marine biology field.
Emily Angeline Staley, daughter of Geri (Information Technology) and Jeff Staley (Strategic Planning), is a valedictorian graduate of Lone Oak High School. She will attend the University of Kentucky this fall on a Presidential Scholarship and plans to major in biology. She is interested in biotechnology and bioengineering and hopes to pursue a career in genetic research.
Marilla Beth Thompson, daughter of Lyndal “Pockets” Thompson (Electrical Maintenance), is an honors graduate of Carlisle County High School. She plans to attend Murray State University to major in speech and language pathology and earn a mater’s degree.
The scholarships are offered for the first year of full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice. In addition to grades, evaluators also consider extracurricular activities, work experience and future plans. There were 32 applicants for the 2007 scholarships. The applicants were ranked anonymously by an independent panel of evaluators.
