USEC Community Calendar Features Artwork by Local Students

PIKETON, Ohio – This year’s Community Calendar issued by USEC features the artwork of students from Pike County and Waverly City schools. USEC’s Piketon Plant sponsored a contest to provide artwork for the Plant’s 2007-08 Community Calendar. In addition to their artwork being featured in the calendar, each student received a $50 U.S. savings bond.

USEC’s Emergency Management department produces the Community Calendar every two years for distribution to plant neighbors in order to make them aware of how the plant will respond in the unlikely event of an emergency. It also gives instructions to neighbors on what to do if the plant’s public warning sirens sound.

The art contest was held in early fall 2006. Margaret McAdams, Professor of Art at Ohio University's Chillicothe (OUC) campus, coordinated the judging. Other judges included Sarah Dilley, Library Associate at OUC, Lesley Seaman-Omata, an Education student at OUC, and Barbara Trube, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at OUC.

Local teachers who helped to coordinate student entries included: Margie Maloy, Waverly Junior High; Janet Martin, Piketon High School; Nadine Massie, Eastern Junior High and Sherry Montgomery, Eastern Intermediate.

USEC honored the winners of the art contest at a luncheon held on Wednesday, December 13, at the Comfort Inn in Piketon.

The calendar includes artwork by the following students:

USEC Inc., a global energy company, is a leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants. It expects to deploy the next generation uranium enrichment technology in Piketon, Ohio – the American Centrifuge. The United States Enrichment Corporation, a subsidiary of USEC Inc., operates a uranium enrichment plant in Paducah, Kentucky, and does contract work for the U.S. Department of Energy in Piketon.
