USEC's Piketon Plant Sets New Safety Record

PIKETON, Ohio - Employees at USEC’s Piketon plant set a new safety record during 2003. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Recordable Injury/Illness (RII) rate for 2003 was the lowest in the history of the plant. Statistical data has shown a steady decline in the number of OSHA recordable injuries/illnesses at the site over the past 13 years.

The Piketon plant is a highly regulated facility, requiring strong safety programs in order to maintain strict compliance with state and federal regulations for the safety and health of employees as well as the public. Crucial elements for a successful safety culture are management and employee commitment to safety.

The Piketon plant’s safety and health professionals work together as a team with representatives from the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical & Energy Workers International (PACE) Union Local 5-689 and the Security Police Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) Local 66. This team also receives support from all organizations at the site to promote safety. Employee area safety committees are active in addressing safety concerns in their respective areas. The Triangle of Prevention Program (TOPP) is a safety program at the Piketon site that is union-led and management-supported. This program identifies causes and develops corrective actions to prevent repeat occurrences.

The PACE Union remains strongly committed to the Piketon plant’s safety program. “I believe that by working safely and efficiently, the results help to ensure the long-term success of our site’s current and significant future opportunities,” said Dan Minter, president, PACE Local 5-689.

Garry Hager, president, SPFPA Local 66, also extended his congratulations. “This safety record could not have been achieved without each and every employee’s participation,” he said.

USEC management remains committed to maintaining a strong safety program through employee involvement. “It is everyone’s responsibility to foster a work environment that promotes safety,” said General Manager Pat Musser. “It is our goal to achieve zero accidents through employee and management ownership of safety.”

The United States Enrichment Corporation is a subsidiary of USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company and the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
