Local USEC Employees Win Company President's Award

PIKETON, Ohio - USEC employees Larry Cutlip and Butch Jones, who work at the Piketon plant, and Lindsey Krause, based at the Company’s Maryland headquarters, were recipients of USEC’s E-III President’s Award last month. USEC President and CEO William H. Timbers recognized the three employees for their management and completion of the initial phase of the Company’s technetium removal project ahead of schedule and within budget.

The technetium removal project is a key element of a June 2002 agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in which USEC pledged to operate facilities at the Piketon plant for a 15-month period in order to remove contaminants from out-of-specification uranium.

In December 2000, USEC reported to DOE that up to 9,550 metric tons of uranium transferred to USEC from DOE prior to USEC’s privatization in 1998 may contain elevated levels of technetium that would put the uranium out of specification for commercial use.

During the 15-month period ending September 17, 2003, USEC successfully processed 2,909 metric tons of out-of-specification uranium. USEC is continuing to process the out-of-specification uranium at Piketon as negotiations continue with DOE to extend the technetium removal program.

Morris Brown, USEC vice president, operations, said that this initial phase of the technetium removal program was the most successful project of its kind he has seen in his forty years in the nuclear industry. Not only was this a first-of-its-kind project, requiring innovative uses of gaseous diffusion plant equipment, but the team also overcame technical, operational and personnel issues on a regular basis. At each juncture, everyone involved was able to tap their years of experience to come up with innovative solutions to keep the process moving along on schedule.

Larry Cutlip, Waverly, serves as manager of feed cleanup at the Piketon plant, and Butch Jones, Lucasville, serves as group manager of the plant’s X-340 Complex, which encompasses the facilities where the technetium removal operations are taking place. Lindsey Krause is USEC’s director, production operations, in Bethesda, MD.

E-III stands for “Employee Excellence and Entrepreneurship.” The USEC President’s Award is given quarterly to employees who show extraordinary performance that results in the significant advancement of a Company goal or a major work process. The President’s Award, together with USEC’s annual Chairman’s Award, is designed to highlight key Company values and recognize those individuals who play important roles in USEC’s success.

The United States Enrichment Corporation is a subsidiary of USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company and the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
