PIKETON, Ohio - Richard L. Mayer II, a Senior Engineer with the Applied Nuclear Technology section at USEC’s Portsmouth Plant, has received an Award of Achievement from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle subchapter C26.10 of the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) International. The award is the result of his many years of participation in writing nondestructive assay (NDA) standards used around the world.
Nondestructive assay is an analytical technique used to determine the type, location, and quantity of radioactive material present in process components and containers. This technique is routinely used to reduce the potential for nuclear proliferation and to ensure that nuclear material is properly safeguarded.
Mayer was the author of the Standard Test Method for Measurement of 235U Fraction using the Enrichment Meter Principle (C1514-02). He is also chairing sessions associated with the development of the ASTM Nondestructive Assay Good Practice Guide.
Receipt of this award is a significant accomplishment that demonstrates a personal commitment to excellence. Mayer, a resident of Portsmouth, is recognized internationally as an NDA expert. He is routinely involved in the development of NDA methods used by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The United States Enrichment Corporation is a subsidiary of USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company and the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
