PIKETON, Ohio - USEC’s Portsmouth Plant received a State of Ohio Radioactive Material’s License on January 9, 2002. This license grants approval for the plant to possess certain radioactive materials for purposes other than uranium enrichment, thus expanding its laboratory capability.
Ohio is one of 32 states under the NRC’s Agreement States Program. Agreement States are those that have accepted authority, through agreement with the NRC, over the licensing of radioactive materials within the state. These states currently regulate about 16,000 radioactive materials licenses. Ohio became an Agreement State in 1999.
The state license specifies the types and quantities of radioactive materials that may be possessed and used, as well as any specific restrictions on their use. It also describes where the materials will be used, training and qualifications of workers, specific procedures for using the materials and any special safety precautions required.
“By successfully obtaining this license, USEC will be better positioned for growth in the laboratory analysis and service sectors of the nuclear industry,” said Gary Workman, Manager, Production Support.
The United States Enrichment Corporation is a subsidiary of USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company and the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
