PIKETON, Ohio - WASTREN Inc., a contractor to Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC, has notified the United States Enrichment Corporation of a potential reduction in waste handler personnel needed effective October 1, 2001. The letter stated that because of uncertainties with Bechtel Jacobs' funding authorizations and final approval on waste management projects in fiscal year 2002, WASTREN is currently projecting a minimum need of eight waste handlers to be available starting October 1.
USEC currently provides 49 chemical operators to support WASTREN as part of a waste operations contract with Bechtel Jacobs, a contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). WASTREN’s contract with Bechtel is up for renewal and is dependent upon funding being made available for cleanup. The contract has not yet been finalized for fiscal year 2002, which for DOE begins on October 1. WASTREN also has a three-year contract with Bechtel to provide site services.
As a result, USEC’s Human Resources is taking steps to notify the local PACE Union and the 41 chemical operators of this potential layoff. USEC will then await official information from Bechtel Jacobs as to whether or not the funding will be approved.
The United States Enrichment Corporation is a subsidiary of USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company and the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
