BETHESDA, Md. - USEC Inc. has awarded Gary Workman, Manager of Feed and Transfer Operations at USEC’s Piketon Uranium Enrichment Plant, its quarterly E-III President’s Award for his leadership of the Feed and Transfer Facility. The E-III Award, which stands for Employee Excellence and Entrepreneurship, recognizes employees for achieving corporate objectives through excellence in their work.
“I would like to congratulate Gary on winning this award,” said William H. Timbers, President and CEO of USEC Inc. “As Manager of the Feed and Transfer Group at Portsmouth, Gary raised his team’s performance to higher levels. His innovative management and leadership led to impressive achievements.”
During October 2000, USEC set a new record for product shipments since USEC’s formation in July 1993. A record 1.87 million separative work units (SWU) were shipped from the Portsmouth plant during October. Enrichment services are sold as SWU, which represent the level of effort required to increase the concentration of U235 in natural uranium. In addition, USEC shipments, which are all sent out from the Portsmouth plant, were on time and within specification during a time when a major modification was underway in the plant’s Feed and Transfer Facility.
Morris Brown, Vice President, Operations, presented Gary with a personalized dated desktop clock and a cash award of $1,000. “The fact that Gary’s own work group nominated him for this award is a testament to his leadership,” said Brown.
Workman has served as Feed and Transfer Operations Manager at the Portsmouth plant since May 1999. He first came to Portsmouth as a Systems Programmer in 1983. In 1990, he became a Department Head in Computing Systems. In 1994, he transferred to the Laboratory as a Section Manager and later served as a Group Manager. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and electrical engineering from Wright State University, and he has completed graduate studies in Engineering Management at Ohio University.
Workman and his wife, Julie, live in Peebles with their two children, Jessica and Nick.
USEC Inc., a global energy company, is the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
