BETHESDA, Md. – USEC Inc.’s Robert S. Eby spoke to attendees of the American Nuclear Society’s annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif., today about the Company’s safeguards and security measures to prevent the proliferation of USEC’s American Centrifuge uranium enrichment technology. Eby, site director of USEC’s Oak Ridge, Tenn., operations, stressed the importance of expanding the use of nuclear power while preventing the proliferation of sensitive technologies like the gas centrifuge USEC has been developing at Oak Ridge.
“Balancing nuclear power’s growth with the risks of sensitive technology proliferation will challenge our industry in the years to come as the United States and the world expand the use of this vital source of clean, reliable electricity,” Eby said. “By fueling that expansion with cleaner, more efficient technologies, tomorrow’s uranium enrichment facilities will be critical to retaining nuclear power’s competitive environmental and financial advantages over other generation sources.”
Eby highlighted some of the measures the Company uses to keep the technology secure such as a security-conscious work environment, stringent physical security with multiple layers, comprehensive information technology systems for monitoring and restricting the flow of electronic data, and proactive monitoring and identification of possible threats.
Eby’s presentation was part of a panel discussion entitled “Uranium Enrichment and Nonproliferation: Challenges in the Nuclear Renaissance.” He also gave an update of USEC’s progress in deploying the American Centrifuge technology and the Company’s plans for continued development work at Oak Ridge.
USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company, is a leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
