PIKETON, Ohio - USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU) has awarded its quarterly E-III President’s Award to Pete Miner, director, Regulatory and Quality Assurance, and to John Oppy, manager, Gas Centrifuge Enrichment Plant (GCEP) Cleanup Operations, for their extraordinary performance in support of USEC’s American Centrifuge Program during the third quarter of 2004.
The E-III Award, which stands for Employee Excellence and Entrepreneurship, recognizes employees for achieving corporate objectives through excellence in their work.
Miner led the team responsible for drafting and submitting the license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the American Centrifuge Plant. The NRC accepted the application for technical review in October, seven months ahead of schedule. In nominating him, Miner’s co-workers cited his leadership, organizational skills and enthusiasm as keys to guiding his team through a very difficult work schedule over the summer to complete the application by August.
Oppy led the GCEP Cleanup Team in the preparation of the existing centrifuge facilities for the deployment of USEC’s Demonstration Facility in 2005. He participated in the development of a new organization to handle the project, was a major contributor in the creation of a thorough and detailed scope of work, and helped to develop the project’s training requirements, performance milestones and worker expectations. Most importantly, his team prepared the facilities in a safe and timely manner. By meeting the August deadline for cleanup, Oppy kept USEC on track to meet its goal of deploying the Demonstration Facility at Piketon late next year.
William Timbers, USEC’s president and chief executive officer, presented both Miner and Oppy with a personalized dated desktop clock and a cash award of $1,000 during a ceremony in late November at USEC's corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.
Miner and his wife, Pattie, live in Jefferson, Md., with their two daughters, Amanda and Samantha. They recently relocated there from Chillicothe where they lived for six years.
Oppy and his wife, Patti, live in Lucasville. They have two sons, Andrew and Jeremy.
USEC Inc., a global energy company, is the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
