BETHESDA, Md. – USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU) recently revised its uranium hexafluoride (UF6 ) manual that is used throughout the nuclear industry as a reference guide for management practices for handling, filling, emptying and shipping containers of UF6.
“The UF6 Manual: Good Handling Practices for Uranium Hexafluoride, USEC-651” is the ninth revision of a document first issued by the Atomic Energy Agency in 1957 to provide information on how UF6 is handled in U.S. gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment plants.
USEC is continuing the policy of the U.S. Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies in sharing its most recent experience with UF6 shipping containers and procedures. The manual is updated periodically to reflect current UF6 handling practices and to be consistent with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) N14.1 regulations.
USEC-651 is incorporated by reference in the Department of Transportation (DOT) Code of Federal Regulations, the DOT Certificates of Competent Authority and DOT Safety Analysis Reports for UF6 Overpacks among other regulatory and informational publications.
Copies of the new UF6 Manual can be purchased from USEC for $60 by completing the purchase form located on the USEC website (www.usec.com) under the “News Room” section.
USEC Inc., a global energy company, is a leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
