USEC Confirms Employee Reductions at Portsmouth Plant
-Complies with WARN Act Notification Requirements-

PIKETON, Ohio - In compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) is issuing a public notification of expected employee reductions at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, beginning June 1. These employee reductions are associated with the ceasing of enrichment operations announced in June 2000.

The WARN Act offers protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of covered plant closings and covered mass layoffs. This notice must be provided to either affected workers or their representatives, to the state dislocated worker unit and to the appropriate local government officials.

The reductions are necessary due to the cessation of uranium enrichment and related plant operations at the Portsmouth facility, announced last year, and are expected to be permanent. Approximately 526 plant employees will be affected. This includes approximately 230 salaried employees and approximately 296 employees who are represented by the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy (PACE) Workers International Union and its Local 5-689. Employees represented by the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) International Union, Local 66, are not expected to be impacted by these reductions.

The reduction numbers are based on current government plans for maintaining the Portsmouth facility in a cold standby condition. USEC is awaiting U.S. Department of Energy authorization to proceed with cold standby operations.

A Career Resource Center has been established at 100 East Third Street in Piketon, staffed with individuals who will assist employees in their search for job opportunities elsewhere. Employees will also receive assistance with determining their eligibility for continuing benefits and will be provided with information on State Employment Offices and similar services.

The United States Enrichment Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU), a global energy company and the world’s leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
