Statement by USEC Inc. on Safety of Plants

BETHESDA, Md. - USEC, Inc. (NYSE: USU) issued the following response to certain statements released today by Ralph Nader, Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project, and the Union of Concerned Scientists:

"Public safety and the safety of plant workers is, and has always been, of paramount importance to USEC. The Paducah and Portsmouth plants leased by USEC from the Department of Energy are safely operated and must achieve compliance with regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). As USEC has publicly disclosed, USEC is subject to a NRC-approved compliance plan and has been implementing certain changes in the plants and operations to reach full compliance.

"In connection with the sale by the U.S. Government of 100 percent of the outstanding shares of USEC, which was completed on July 28, 1998, USEC filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The registration statement contained extensive disclosure regarding the Company and its operations, including full disclosure regarding NRC's extensive regulation of USEC."
